Identification of elastic constants of FCC metals from 2D load-indentation curves

چکیده
We derive an expression relating the axial load, the indentation depth, and the elastic constants of an orthotropic material, and simplify it to that for a cubic material (e.g., an FCC single crystal). We use this formula and results of three virtual (i.e., numerical) indentation tests on the same specimen oriented differently to find values of the elastic moduli, and show that they agree well with their expected values. We also give the error in the computed values of the elastic moduli of an FCC crystal caused by the misorientation of the specimen during the indentation test. The technique can be generalized to other anisotropic materials. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Simulations of Indentation at Continuum and Atomic Levels
The main goal of this work is to determine values of elastic constants of orthotropic, transversely isotropic and cubic materials through indentation tests on thin layers bonded to rigid substrates. Accordingly, we first use the Stroh formalism to provide an analytical solution for generalized plane strain deformations of a linear elastic anisotropic layer bonded to a rigid substrate, and inden...
متن کاملElzaki transform method for finding solutions to two-dimensional elasticity problems in polar coordinates formulated using Airy stress functions
In this paper, the Elzaki transform method is used for solving two-dimensional (2D) elasticity problems in plane polar coordinates. Airy stress function was used to express the stress compatibility equation as a biharmonic equation. Elzaki transform was applied with respect to the radial coordinate to a modified form of the stress compatibility equation, and the biharmonic equation simplified t...
متن کاملon the Elastic Stability of Sleeve Stiffened Hollow Columns; Focusing on Determination of Optimal Design Curves (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The stability analysis of sleeve stiffened pin-ended slender hollow columns of pipe or box section is performed in the present study. This is accomplished by using energy method, employing three terms in the assumed approximate deflection function. The lengthy and tedious algebraic manipulations involved in solving the relevant eigenvalue problem, necessitates employing the "MATHEMATICA" softwa...
متن کاملNano-indentation of Cubic and Tetragonal Single Crystals
Due to the nature of their material properties, Calcium Fluoride (CaF2), Magnesium Fluoride (MgF2), and Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) are widely used for industrial purposes. A better understanding of the mechanical properties of these materials is of technological and scientific importance. The indentation nano-mechanical response of CaF2 (cubic), MgF2 (tetragonal), and KDP (tetragonal)...
متن کاملElastic modulus of rat whiskers—A key biomaterial in the rat whisker sensory system
Nanoindentation tests were carried out to measure the elastic modulus of rat whisker, which is used as a high-acuity sensor for exploring the world and discriminating object distance, size and surface texture. The measured load–depth curves show that the biomaterial of rat whisker exhibits obvious visco-elastic characteristic, such as load relaxation and displacement creeping. The measured inde...
